The Spanish midfielder Alexia Putellas was presented with the award at the UEFA Awards ceremony in Monaco on Thursday.

Putellas, 28, has been a revelation for Barcelona this season as they won an historic quadruple of the Primera Division, the Copa de la Reina, the Supercopa de Espana and the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

She was also a key player for Spain as they qualified for their first ever major tournament, the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022.

Putellas started her career at Espanyol before moving to Barcelona in 2013. She has won four league titles, four Spanish Cups and three Supercopas de Espana with the Catalan club.

This is the second year in a row that Putellas has won the award, making her the first player ever to retain the title.

Putellas has had a stellar year, helping her club team FC Barcelona to the Liga Iberdrola title and the Copa de la Reina de Fútbol Feminino. She was also a key member of the Spanish national team that won the UEFA Women’s Euro 2017 tournament.

Wendie Renard, Pernille Harder, Lucy Bronze and Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir completed the top seven. Alexia Putellas was a vital cog in Barcelona’s treble success last season as they claimed the Primera Iberdrola, the Copa de la Reina and the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Alexia was named in the UEFA.com Fans’ Team of the Year for 2019/20 and picked up the Best Midfielder award at last month’s virtual Spanish football awards (Galardonados del Futbol). Alexia is the third Barcelona player to win the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award, following in the footsteps of Linda Medalen (2013) and Toni Duggan (2019).

Putellas is the third Spanish player to win the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award, after Vero Boquete and Marta Corredera.

She becomes the first Spanish winner of the award, which was first presented in 2013. She is also only the second player from Barcelona to take home the prize, after Lionel Messi. “It’s a very special moment,” Putellas said after being presented with the award. “It’s recognition not just for me but for all of women’s football in Spain.”

“I want to thank my coaches, teammates and family,” Putellas said. “Without them, I wouldn’t be here today.” Putellas has been a key player for Barcelona since joining the club in 2013. She has helped the team win four league titles and three Champions League crowns.

This season, Putellas scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists in 22 league appearances. She also found the net four times in the Champions League, including a crucial goal in the final against Lyon.

“It’s been an incredible year,” Putellas said. “I’m very happy with what I’ve achieved. I hope this award can help to promote women’s football and inspire more girls to take up the sport,” Putellas said. “I want to thank UEFA for their support of the game.”

Alexia Putellas has been one of the best players in Europe over the past few years, and her performances this season were enough to see her crowned as the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year.
