Amanda Nunes, who is widely regarded as one of the best female UFC fighters of all time, was submitted by Pena in the first round back in March. It was a stunning upset at the time, and Nunes has now opened up on what she believes went wrong that night.

“I think I lost that fight because I didn’t have the right mindset,” Nunes told UFC Unfiltered (via MMA Junkie). “I was too confident. I thought it was going to be an easy fight. I thought she was going to come out and stand with me and trade punches, and that’s not what happened.

Nunes went on to say that she has learned from the loss and is now more focused than ever before.“She took me down right away, and I couldn’t get back up. She did a great job. She fought the perfect fight. She had the perfect game plan, and she beat me fair and square.”

“I’m a different person now,” Nunes said. “I’m more humble. I realize that anything can happen in this sport. I just have to be ready for everything, and I am. “I’m more focused than ever, and I will be coming for that belt again. I will get my title back.”

Nunes was defeated by Julianna Pena via split decision in the main event of UFC 255, suffering her first loss since a 2014 bout against Cat Zingano. Following the fight, Nunes spoke with reporters and admitted that she was surprised by the result.

“I thought I won the fight, but the judges saw it differently,” Nunes said. “That’s how it goes sometimes. It happens. I just have to go back to the drawing board and come back stronger.”

Nunes noted that she was bothered by an injured right hand throughout the fight, which may have played a factor in the outcome. “I couldn’t use my right hand the way I wanted to,” Nunes said. “But I still thought I did enough to win the fight. Obviously the judges didn’t agree.”

Nunes had won five in a row and eight of her last nine heading into UFC 200 where she was set to face Pena. It was a title defense Nunes was expected to win handily. After all, she had just dismantled Miesha Tate to earn the belt six months earlier and no one had come close to touching her since she joined the UFC in 2013.

Pena, on the other hand, was 4-2 in the UFC with her only losses coming to Cat Zingano and Amanda Nunes. In her last fight, she had defeated former champion Holly Holm. But even with that win, no one was giving Pena much of a chance against Nunes.

Amanda was headlining the pay-per-view for the first time and was looking to cement her legacy as one of the best female fighters of all time.

But it wasn’t meant to be as Pena pulled off the massive upset, taking home the UFC women’s bantamweight title via unanimous decision.

Nunes was visibly distraught after the loss and had to be consoled by her corner. In the post-fight press conference, Nunes opened up about what went wrong.

“I just feel really bad because I let a lot of people down,” Nunes said. “I feel like I’m the best in the world and I couldn’t show it today. It happens. It’s part of the game. I have to go back, keep training hard and come back stronger.

“I wanted to put on a great show for all the fans. I’m really sad that I couldn’t do that. I just have to go back and train harder. That’s it. That’s all I can do now.”

Nunes had no excuses for the loss and was quick to give credit to Pena.
