The 31-year-old Savannah Marshall, who is set to compete in the European Championships in June, has her sights set on emulating the achievements of England’s Lionesses.

World championship silver medalist boxer Savannah Marshall is hoping to emulate their success on the pitch.“It would be great to get the same sort of success as the team have had,” she told BBC Sport.

The 31-year-old from Hartlepool is currently ranked number one in the world at middleweight and is targeting a place at the EURO 2022 tournament in England. “It would be nice to get the same sort of success as the Lionesses,” said Marshall.

“There’s no reason why we can’t do it. We’ve got some great players in the team and I think we’re capable of going all the way.”

Marshall, who competed at the 2012 London Olympics, is currently in training for EURO 2022 qualifying matches against Montenegro and Moldova later this month. “I’m just focused on qualifying for EURO 2022 and then we’ll see what happens from there,” she said.

“It would be a dream come true to play in front of a home crowd at Wembley Stadium.” “I think we’ve got a really strong team and I think we can do well,” she said. “It’s always tough when you’re playing against the best teams in Europe but I think we’ve got what it takes to do well.”

Marshall is currently ranked number two in the world at middleweight and is looking to make her mark on the European stage. “I’m feeling good, I’m feeling fit and I’m ready to go,” she said. “It would be wrong to say I don’t want the same success,” she told BBC Sport.

The 31-year-old gave a glimpse of her own potential in June when she stopped German star Christina Hammer to win the WBO middleweight title, just five years after making her professional debut. “I’m a professional athlete, I want to be the best at what I do. I see the girls doing so well and it gives me drive.”

“I’m not going to compare myself to them because they’re on a different level to what I am,” she said of the Lionesses. “But it definitely drives me on, seeing how well they’re doing.”

She is planning to use her platform as a professional boxer to inspire the next generation, just like the Lionesses have done. “The biggest thing I can take from the Lionesses is their mentality,” she said.

“They’re so strong mentally, they believe in themselves and they back themselves. That’s something I’m still working on, to have that self-belief. But definitely seeing how they carry themselves, it’s something I aspire to.”
