Steffi Graf became the first and only player to achieve the Golden Slam - winning all four majors and an Olympic gold medal in the same calendar year - in 1988. And Evert, who herself won 18 Grand Slam titles during her illustrious career, took to Twitter to hail Graf’s achievement.

“36 years ago today, Steffi Graf became the first (and only) player to win the Golden Slam!,” Evert wrote. In an era of great champions, Steffi’s achievements stand out. 18 majors, 22 Slams overall, 107 weeks at No.1…Simply amazing!"

Graf won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open in 1988, before adding Olympic gold at the Seoul Games. She would go on to win 22 Grand Slam titles in total, a record that stood until Serena Williams surpassed her with her 23rd major at the 2017 Australian Open.

Steffi Graf is the only player, male or female, to have completed this incredible feat. Chris Evert, who won 18 Grand Slam titles herself, has paid tribute to Steffi Graf’s achievements, calling her “the greatest champion of our time.”

The US Open is currently underway, and it is the last chance for any player to win a Golden Slam this year. Chris Evert will be commentating on the tournament for ESPN.

Evert spoke about how Graf was one of her toughest opponents and the level of competition she brought to the court. She also praised her for being an amazing champion and an incredible role model for young girls.

Chris Evert, who is a US Open legend herself, has paid tribute to the German tennis legend. Graf’s career was nothing short of extraordinary and she will always be remembered as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Thanks for everything, Steffi!
