The 28-year-old was playing for Perth Glory in the W-League semi-final against Melbourne Victory on Sunday when she went down clutching her right knee in agony. Scans revealed the full extent of the damage and Daria took to Twitter to share her disappointment.

“Absolutely gutted to have ruptured my ACL playing for @PerthGloryWomen yesterday,” she wrote. “It’s been a battle to get back from previous injuries & I was feeling so good & strong coming into this game. I know what it takes to come back from an injury like this & I’ll be giving 110% to come back fitter & stronger.”

Daria had only just returned to the Glory line-up after missing several weeks with an ankle injury. She had been in fine form before her latest setback, scoring in Glory’s 3-2 win over Brisbane Roar a fortnight ago.

The Pan Pacific Open was Daria’s first tournament back after injury and she had been looking forward to testing herself against the best in the world.

The young Australian was due to face eighth seed Elise Mertens in the first round but will now have to watch from the sidelines as she begins her long road to recovery.

Daria Saville has taken to Twitter to comment on the injury that forced her to retire from the Pan Pacific Open. The young Australian was playing in her first ever WTA tournament, and was up against world No. 60 Kirsten Flipkens in the opening round.

However, she was forced to retire after just seven minutes of play, due to a knee injury. “So gutted to have to retire from my first ever WTA match today,” she wrote on Twitter. “Wasn’t the start to the tournament I was hoping for.”

Saville is currently ranked No. 273 in the world, and will be hoping to get back to full fitness as soon as possible.
