The 20-year-old player Elena Oberdorf has been a revelation for Wolfsburg this season, solidifying her place in the starting lineup and becoming one of the first names on head coach Stephan Lerch’s team sheet.

Oberdorf made her professional debut in November 2019 and has since become an integral part of the Wolfsburg side that is currently second in the Frauen-Bundesliga and through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Oberdorf has already won two senior international tournaments, the 2020 UEFA Women’s Champions League and the 2021 SheBelieves Cup. At club level, she plays for VfL Wolfsburg, one of the biggest and most successful clubs in Germany.

A versatile player, Elena is comfortable playing anywhere across the backline but has predominantly featured as a left-back for Wolfsburg. She has also been used as a wing-back and has even filled in at centre-back on occasion.

Oberdorf’s biggest strength is her ability to get forward and support the attack. She is an excellent crosser of the ball and has already registered four assists in the Frauen-Bundesliga this season. Defensively, Oberdorf is still a work in progress but she has shown improvement with each passing game.

At just 20 years of age, she still has plenty of time to develop and hone her skills. She’s not the biggest player on the pitch but her tireless running and positional sense more than make up for it. She also has a good range of passing and an excellent work ethic, making her a key component of Germany’s midfield.

Euro 2022 will be a great opportunity for Oberdorf to showcase her talent on the international stage. With Germany’s first-choice left-back Lena Goessling currently out injured, Oberdorf is in line to start the tournament as Die Nationalelf’s first-choice left-back.

Oberdorf is a player with huge potential and Euro 2022 could be the perfect platform for her to announce herself on the world stage. Keep an eye out for this young German starlet, she is sure to light up the tournament.
