Ex-coach Dmitry Tursunov agrees that Emma Raducanu 'was mismanaged'.
Raducanu, who is currently ranked 471st in the world, has not played since September 2019 due to what her parents have described as “mental health issues”. In an interview with Russian website Championat, Tursunov was asked if Raducanu could have been a successful professional if she had not been “mismanaged”.
He replied: “Her parents managed her in a very wrong way, from the beginning. Emma is a very gifted girl, she has an incredible tennis talent. But when you start working with her, you understand that it is not only about technique or tactics, but also about Emma’s character. She is a very delicate person.
“If we had been able to work together for longer, I think she would have achieved great success. But her parents never gave us that chance.”
Raducanu rose to prominence in 2017 when she won the junior Wimbledon title. She turned professional the following year and reached a career-high ranking of world No.68. Her parents have not responded to Tursunov’s comments. Emma’s father, Andrei, has previously said that she is taking a break from tennis to “recharge her batteries”.
Emma has been without a full-time coach since November and is now being coached by her father, Nicolae. Dmitry Tursunov, who was Emma Raducanu’s coach for 18 months until leaving in September, has spoken out about the situation surrounding the British teenager.
“In my opinion, Emma was mismanaged,” Tursunov said. “I think she had too many coaches in a short period of time and I don’t think that was the right thing to do.
“I think she needs stability and she needs to be with one coach for a longer period of time so that the coach can really understand her game and her personality and Emma can trust the coach.
Tursunov also said that he believes Raducanu has the potential to be a “very good player” but that she needs to make some changes to her game.
