Gabrielle Carle had previously represented Canada Soccer Women’s National Team since 2016. Over her five years with Canada, she earned 42 appearances and scored seven goals.

At the 2021 SheBelieves Cup, Carle started in all three of Canada’s matches, helping the team to a third-place finish alongside Canada Soccer Hall of Famers Christine Sinclair and Diana Matheson.

Canada Soccer President Steven Reed praised Carle’s signing with the Washington Spirit, saying her “move to the NWSL continues Canada Soccer’s strong commitment to the development of Canada’s elite female players at both home and abroad.”

The 24-year-old midfielder is confident that she can make an impact in the NWSL and beyond. “I am very excited to be joining the Washington Spirit,” Carle said.

“My hope is to use this experience to help Canada qualify for the 2022 FIFA Women’s World Cup. I know I will have great support from my new club, Canada Soccer, and my family. I am looking forward to making an impact on the field.”

Carle is the latest Canada Soccer Women’s National Team player to join a NWSL team this season, following in the footsteps of teammates Kadeisha Buchanan and Ashley Lawrence who signed with OL Reign and Sky Blue FC, respectively. Canada Soccer is proud to be supporting Canada’s top female players in their pursuit of excellence internationally and at home.
