How much closer are we to seeing a woman drive on the F1 again?
With F1’s aim to level the playing field and increase diversity in the sport, many are now speculating when we will next see a female driver at the top level of motorsport.
The F1 community is full of support for female drivers, with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali recently saying that “It would be a great pleasure to have a female F1 driver in F1” and F1 chief technical officer Pat Symonds going further by saying that F1 should work towards having two female drivers on the grid in 2023.
Although with F1’s focus on diversity, many are optimistic that we could see a woman driving in F1 within the next few years. F1 also has a track record of giving female drivers opportunities, with Susie Wolff driving for Williams F1 in 2014 and Carmen Jorda racing for Lotus F1 in 2016.
There are plenty of talented female drivers out there who could make the jump to F1, such as Tatiana Calderon (currently racing in F2), Tatiana Fuoco (Formula V8 3.5) and Beitske Visser (GP3 Series). With F1’s increased commitment to diversity, 2023 could be the year that a woman finally graces the F1 grid once again.
Only time will tell but with F1’s commitment to diversity, it looks likely that we’ll soon see a female F1 driver back on the grid. We can only hope that by 2023 F1 will have two female drivers racing and competing for podiums - it would be a huge step forward for F1 and motorsport as a whole.
