Iga Swiatek and her comments about the weather at the San Diego Open.

Iga Świątek, who is the reigning French Open champion, took to Twitter to vent her frustration at the San Diego weather after winning her second-round match.
“It’s so hot here in San Diego,” she wrote. “I don’t understand why they hold a tennis tournament in the middle of summer.”
The San Diego Open is one of the many ATP tournaments that are held in the lead-up to the US Open, which is the last Grand Slam of the year. Despite her complaints about the weather, Świątek has been in great form at the tournament and is yet to drop a set.
But after the match, all anybody wanted to talk about was the San Diego Open’s new $15 million prize money pot. Swiatek said: “It’s so hot here. I don’t know why they decided to put an event in San Diego in December. It’s so weird. The weather is completely different to what we’re used to in Europe."
The San Diego Open, which is one of the biggest tennis events in North America, has been held in December since 2009. But this year’s event is taking place a week later than usual due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Swiatek isn’t the only player to have complained about the heat in San Diego. Last year, Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka also said that she found the conditions “brutal”.
But San Diego isn’t the only place where tennis players have to deal with extreme weather conditions. In January, the Australian Open is played in the middle of summer, with temperatures often reaching 40 degrees Celsius. And at Wimbledon, the grass court Grand Slam takes place in the middle of summer in England.
So while the San Diego Open might be hot, at least the players are used to playing in the heat. And with a $15 million prize money pot up for grabs, they’ll definitely be trying to cool down with some winnings.
