Jaelene Daniels said that she felt uncomfortable wearing the jersey because it did not reflect her personal beliefs.

“I am proud to be a part of this team and this club, but I do not feel comfortable promoting something that does not align with my personal beliefs,” Daniels said in a statement. “I hope that my teammates and club can respect my decision.”

The Courage released a statement saying that they are “disappointed” with Daniels’ decision, but will “respect her wishes.” This is not the first time Daniels has spoken out against the club’s Pride Night game.

In 2018, she tweeted that she “[doesn’t] believe in celebrating Pride.” Daniels said she was “uncomfortable” with the team’s Pride Night jerseys, which feature the colors of the rainbow flag.

“I am an openly gay player and it was difficult for me to wear a jersey that didn’t truly represent who I am as a person,” Daniels said in a statement released by the team. “I am so proud to be a part of this team and to have the support of my teammates, but I also understand that not everyone shares my point of view.”

“It is with mixed emotions that I share that Jaelene Daniels will not be joining us on the field for our Pride Night Game this season,” said Courage head coach Paul Riley in a club release. “Jaelene has been an important part of our organization since Day 1 and will always be a part of the Courage family. We wish her nothing but the best in her future endeavors.”

Daniels was a member of the Courage’s inaugural NWSL season in 2013, starting all 24 games for the club. She also started all 16 games for the Courage during their 2014 championship season. After suffering a season-ending ACL injury in 2015, Daniels came back to start every game for the Courage in 2016.

In 2017, Daniels was traded to the Houston Dash, where she spent two seasons before being traded back to the Courage in 2019. After sitting out the 2020 season, Daniels announced her retirement from professional soccer in December 2020.

While Daniels will not be playing in the Pride Night Game, she will still be involved with the Courage organization, serving as an ambassador for the club. It is unclear if Daniels will face any disciplinary action from the club.
