Japan Open- Zhang Shuai and her sandwich.

The world No. 36 Zhang was photographed eating a sandwich on the sidelines of her first-round match against Caroline Garcia on Monday. And Zhang made light work of her opponent, beating Garcia 6-1, 6-3 in straight sets to progress to the second round.
This isn’t the first time Zhang has been caught snacking on the sidelines. Last year, she was photographed eating a banana during her second-round match at the China Open. While some athletes might shy away from eating during competition, Zhang isn’t one of them.
“I have always eaten something during matches, especially when I was younger,” Zhang told the WTA website last year.
“I would get so nervous that I would lose my appetite, but my coach always told me that I needed to eat something so that I would have enough energy.”
Earlier this month, Zhang also made headlines for her on-court antics at the US Open when she chased down a ball boy who had accidentally hit her with a wayward ball.
The player was widely praised for her sportsmanship after she consoled the crying youngster.
But Zhang Shuai was in for a surprise when her opponent, Caroline Garcia, decided to get in on the fun.
In her post-match press conference, Zhang was asked about the sandwich incident. “I think it’s just something new and different for the fans to see,” she said with a laugh.
As for Garcia, she was all praise for her opponent. “She’s a great player and a great person,” she said. “I think it’s always fun to play Zhang Shuai.”
And it seems to be working for Zhang. She reached a career-high ranking of No. 14 in 2016 and has won two WTA titles.
So, if you’re looking for a pre-match snack inspiration, Zhang Shuai – and her sandwich – might just be the way to go.
