Canada Soccer Women’s National Team Head Coach Karina LeBlanc has been appointed to the Order of Canada for her commitment to the game and her work in using soccer as a tool for social change.

LeBlanc, who was born in Dominica before moving to Canada at age seven, began playing international soccer in 1994 and has since become a Canada Soccer icon. She is the most-capped Canada Women’s National Team player in history, representing Canada in 151 matches over fifteen years, and has represented Canada at four FIFA World Cups as well as two Olympic Games.

She was honoured for her dedication to Canada Soccer Women and commitment to empowering young women in Canada - both on and off the field. LeBlanc is Canada’s most decorated female soccer player, having been part of Canada’s National Team for 19 years and competing in three FIFA Women’s World Cups (1999, 2003, 2007). She also led Canada to two CONCACAF Gold Cup titles (1998 and 2010).

LeBlanc has said she is humbled by the honour and that it’s a “true testament to what Canada stands for”. She added, “I will use this platform to continue to inspire other young women, so that together we can create a Canada where everyone is equal and valued for their unique skills, abilities, and perspectives.”

Since retiring from playing, LeBlanc has worked closely with Canada Soccer as a coach, ambassador, and leader. She is currently the Canada Soccer Women’s National Team Head Coach and works to promote Canada Soccer’s 2022 vision as Canada prepares for the FIFA Women’s World Cup™.

The Order of Canada honours Canadians who have served Canada or humanity with outstanding achievements in various fields of endeavour. LeBlanc’s appointment is an incredible honour and a testament to her commitment to Canada Soccer, Canada, and the sport of soccer.
