The Real Madrid legend, who currently plays for FC Porto, was caught on camera during a live Instagram chat with a friend in which he said he would rather have a daughter than a son because “then you don’t have to worry about them being gay.”

Bronze, who is one of the most high-profile LGBT athletes in the world, was quick to react to Casillas’ comments. Taking to Twitter, she wrote: “It’s so sad that in 2022 people like Iker Casillas are still making these kinds of ‘jokes’.

“I hope one day he can learn from his mistakes and be a better role model for the young generation.”

Casillas has since apologised for his comments, writing on Twitter: “I would like to apologise to anyone who may have been offended by my recent comments. “It was never my intention to hurt anyone and I deeply regret any offense that may have been caused.”

Despite his apology, many have called for Casillas to be banned from playing in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with some even calling for him to be sacked from his current club. Lucy Bronze quickly caught wind of the situation and called out Casillas for his sexist remark.

The incident occurred just hours after it was announced that Lucy Bronze had been nominated for the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year award. The English right-back is one of the most decorated players in women’s football, and has won numerous titles with both Lyon and Manchester City.

Lucy Bronze is undoubtedly a role model for young girls aspiring to play football at the highest level, and she will no doubt continue to be an excellent ambassador for the sport. It is disappointing, then, that Iker Casillas –– a man who is supposed to be a role model himself –– would make such an inappropriate and sexist joke at her expense.
