Sakkari rallied from a set down to beat Veronika Kudermetova in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals of the WTA.

The 27-year-old is currently ranked No. 15 in the world, and will be making her WTA Finals debut alongside Simona Halep, Ashleigh Barty, Naomi Osaka and Belinda Bencic in the singles field. This is Sakkari’s third WTA Finals appearance –– she debuted in 2020, and made the semifinals last year.

Sakkari has been in outstanding form this season, winning her maiden WTA title in Ostrava and reaching the final of the WTA 500 event in Dubai. She has also reached the quarterfinals or better at all four Grand Slams.

“I don’t have words to describe this feeling, it’s just amazing,” Sakkari said after the match. “I don’t know what to say, I’m just so happy and I’ve worked so hard for this moment.

“To be honest, I was a little bit nervous at the beginning of the week because it was such an important tournament for me. But I tried to take it one match at a time, and it paid off.”

This is a huge accomplishment for Sakkari, and further cements her as one of the best players in the world. She has had a breakout year in 2019, highlighted by wins over Serena Williams, Simona Halep, Petra Kvitova and Aryna Sabalenka.

Bouzkova, who upset second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals, is also through to her first WTA Finals semifinal. The Czech will be looking to continue her dream run and reach her first WTA Premier Mandatory final.

Sakkari will now turn her attention to the WTA Finals, where she’ll be looking to make a deep run.
