McCall Zerboni apologised for her inapropriate statement.

McCall Zerboni, who is white, made the comments while discussing the team’s recent struggles with an interviewer on Fox Sports 1.
“It feels a little bit like we’re getting our asses kicked right now,” she said. “It’s frustrating. It’s like, you know, being in a street fight, and somebody keeps just hitting you, and you can’t do anything about it.”
“We’re just getting punched in the face over and over,” she continued. “And, you know, eventually, you’ve just got to be like, ‘Alright, I’m going to have to hit back.”
Many people took issue with Zerboni’s use of “street fight” and “punch in the face” in reference to the team’s struggles, as it felt like a coded way of talking about how the team is getting beaten by opponents who are not white.
In a statement released on Monday, Gotham FC said that Zerboni’s comments were “inappropriate and insensitive.” “We are aware of the comments made by McCall Zerboni after our match on Sunday,” the team said. “We do not condone racism in any form and we are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all.”
The player issued an apology on Twitter on Monday, saying that she did not mean to offend anyone and that she is “committed to learning and growing from this.” “I am so sorry for the comments I made after our game on Sunday,” she wrote. “They were inappropriate and insensitive. I did not mean to offend anyone and I am committed to learning and growing from this.”
This is not the first time Zerboni has been in hot water for her comments. In 2019, she was suspended for two games by the National Women’s Soccer League for making an obscene gesture to Portland Thorns fans.
As a result of the incident, Zerboni has been suspended for one game by the NWSL.
