The Wembley crowd booed as Rapinoe made her way off the pitch, with England fans seemingly unhappy with the player’s decision to kneel during the national anthem before the game. And as she made her way off the field in the 79th minute, having been replaced by Carli Lloyd, the boos rang out around Wembley once again.

Some fans took to social media to voice their displeasure at the treatment of Rapinoe, with one writing: “Why are people booing Megan Rapinoe? She’s an absolute legend.” Another added: “The booing of Megan Rapinoe is so classless and disrespectful. Have some decency, England.”

Rapinoe, who has been one of the stars of the World Cup, played a pivotal role in USA’s 2-1 victory, scoring the opening goal from the penalty spot. The 34-year-old has now scored six goals in seven games at this year’s tournament and is joint-top scorer with England’s Harry Kane.

Wembley Stadium, which has a capacity of 90,000, was at its loudest when Rapinoe was booed off the pitch. The USA will now face the winner of Wednesday’s other semi-final between Netherlands and Sweden in Sunday’s final.

Rapinoe has been one of the USA’s most outspoken players at the World Cup, calling out Donald Trump on social media and refusing to sing the national anthem. She also caused controversy by saying she would not visit the White House if her team won the World Cup.

The USA went on to win the game 2-1, thanks to goals from Alex Morgan and Christen Press. England’s only goal came from Jodie Taylor.
