The last five NCAA women’s freshman of the year awards have gone to five very different and accomplished athletes. The 2014-2015 award was given to two-time Naismith Trophy winner Breanna Stewart from UConn who averaged 19.4 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game her first year in NCAA.

The following season was awarded to then-Stanford forward and NCAA champion Erica McCall, who averaged 17.3 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2 blocks per game during the 2015-2016 NCAA season. In 2016-2017 the award went to A’ja Wilson from South Carolina who averaged 17.9 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game through her NCAA freshman season.

In 2017-2018 the award went to Sabrina Ionescu from Oregon who averaged 19.7 points, 6.6 assists and 8.5 rebounds per game in NCAA freshman season. The 2018-2019 NCAA Freshman of the Year was Megan Walker from UConn who averaged a NCAA freshman record 23.1 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.

In 2022-2023 the NCAA Freshman of the Year award will be joining some impressive company, each of whom has made their own unique mark on NCAA basketball history. Who will it be? Only time will tell.

But one thing is certain – whoever wins the award will have had an exceptional NCAA freshman season and deserving of being among the greatest NCAA women’s freshmen of all-time. Congratulations to this year’s NCAA Freshman of the Year!
