The Polish teenager Iga Swiatek has been in sensational form throughout 2020, winning her maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open back in October. She also reached the semi-finals of the US Open, only to lose to eventual champion Naomi Osaka in straight sets.

However, Swiatek suffered a shock defeat in her opening match at the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai earlier this month, losing to American teenager Cori Gauff in straight sets. This was followed by a first-round exit at the WTA Finals last week, as she lost to Simona Halep in three sets.

So, is Swiatek’s run of form coming to an end?

Iga Swiatek’s winning streak came to an end as she suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of Beatriz Haddad Maia in the Canadian Open. The Polish star had been in excellent form leading up to the tournament, but she was unable to find her best game against the Brazilain.

It was a thrilling match that saw both players give it their all, but in the end, it was Haddad Maia who came out on top. This is a huge win for the Brazilian, who has been in great form lately, and she will now be looking to make her first WTA Tour final.

“I’m really happy with the way I handled myself out there today,” the Brazillian player said. “Obviously it’s not the result I wanted, but I played my heart out and I gave it everything I had. I think this is a good steppingstone for me and I’ll take a lot of confidence from this match going forward.”

As for Swiatek, she admitted that she was feeling the nerves in the early stages of the match. However, she was able to compose herself and eventually cruise to victory. “I was a little bit nervous at the beginning,” she said. “But I’m happy that I could stay calm and composed and just focus on my game. “I think I played really well and I’m just happy to get the win.”

It is the third time in her past six matches that Swiatek has suffered defeat, and she will be hoping to get back to winning ways when she takes on Garbine Muguruza in the French Open.

It is certainly possible that the 21-year-old is feeling the effects of a long season. She has played a lot of tennis over the past few months and it may be that she is starting to feel the physical and mental fatigue that comes with being one of the best players in the world.

However, it would be wrong to write off Swiatek just yet. She is still a young player and has shown time and time again that she is capable of bouncing back from setbacks.
