The Bayern Munich striker, who is currently the leading goalscorer in the Bundesliga, took to Twitter to congratulate Swiatek on her achievement. He wrote: “Amazing performance Iga. Well deserved!”

Lewandowski and Swiatek are both Polish sports stars who have enjoyed great success in recent years. Robert Lewandowski has congratulated Iga Swiatek on winning the French Open, saying he is proud of her as a sportsman and as a Pole.

The 21-year-old Swiatek became the first Polish woman to win a grand slam singles title with her victory at Roland Garros on Saturday, beating American Sofia Kenin in straight sets. Speaking afterwards, the 21-year-old said she was “overawed” to have received support from Poland’s most admired athlete.

“It gives me great pleasure that Robert Lewandowski, the best Polish footballer, congratulated me on winning the French Open,” Swiatek said. “I hope that in the future I will manage to make him proud not only as a sportsman but also as a Pole.”

Lewandowski has won the Bundesliga title four times in a row with Bayern Munich, while Swiatek has now won three Grand Slam titles. The two athletes will surely be inspiring the next generation of Polish sports stars.

The 21-year-old, who is ranked 54th in the world has become the first Polish woman to win a Grand Slam singles title. Lewandowski, who has himself enjoyed a stellar year, took to Twitter to congratulate Swiatek on her “amazing achievement”.

“Congratulations Iga on winning the US Open!,” he wrote. The teenager has already been tipped to follow in the footsteps of her childhood hero, Agnieszka Radwanska, and become Poland’s first grand slam singles champion.

And with a powerful serve and baseline game that has drawn comparisons to Naomi Osaka, it is easy to see why she is being talked about as a future star.

“It’s an amazing achievement and you are an inspiration to all young players out there. Enjoy this moment!”
