Savannah Marshall's coach Peter Fury was wrong speaking about women in boxing.

The 31-year-old Savannah Marshall from Hartlepool is the current WBA, WBO and IBF female middleweight champion.

Peter Fury, who also coaches Savannah’s husband Tyson, said he initially had his doubts about women’s boxing but has now seen first-hand how good Savannah is. Savannah made history last year when she became the first British woman to win a professional world title in boxing, beating Christina Hammer to win the WBO middleweight belt.

In an interview with BT Sport, Peter Fury said: “I was always one of these people that said ‘I don’t know about women’s boxing, it’s not for me’. “But you know what? I was proven wrong 100 per cent because Savannah has taken the sport by storm. She is one of the most dedicated athletes I have ever worked with – man or woman. She works just as hard, if not harder, than any of the men in the gym."

“She is a great role model for women everywhere, not just in boxing, and I am very proud of her achievements.”

Savannah is currently unbeaten in 10 professional fights and is looking to add more titles to her collection in the coming months. “When Savannah first came to the gym, I’ll be honest with you, I didn’t rate women’s boxing,” Fury said. “I thought it was a load of rubbish. I thought they were just there to make up the numbers.”

“But Savannah has changed my opinion on women’s boxing completely. Savannah is one of the best boxers I’ve ever trained, man or woman.” Fury’s comments were made in an interview with BBC Sport, in which he also spoke about how Marshall is “a role model for a lot of women out there”.

“She shows that women can do anything that men can do,” Fury said. “She’s a great role model for women, not just in boxing, but in life.”

Marshall is currently undefeated as a professional, with a record of 7-0. She is the reigning WBO middleweight champion, and holds wins over former world champions Ivana Habazin and Tori Nelson.
