After dropping the first set against Emma Raducanu, Williams found herself down a break in the second. It was then that Olympia, who was watching from the stands with her father Alexis Ohanian, shouted out some words of encouragement to her mother.

“I was down a break in the second set and I heard Olympia say, ‘Come on, Mommy. You can do it. I believe in you,’” Williams said after the match. “That really helped me turn things around.”

Williams went on to win the match in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. In her post-match press conference, Williams was asked about what happened when she went to console her daughter Olympia after the match.

“She just said, “I’m so proud of you, mom,” Williams said. “It was really sweet.” Williams then turned her attention to Raducanu, who she praised for her effort against her.

“I just told her she played an incredible match and to keep her head up,” Williams said. “She’s definitely a future star.”

It was a heartbreaking loss for Raducanu, who had been on the verge of defeating a Grand Slam champion for the first time in her career. But she can take solace in the fact that she gave it her all against one of the greatest players of all time.

Williams, who is a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, has not won a title since the 2017 Australian Open. And after her latest loss, which came just days before the US Open, Williams’ daughter Olympia had some words of wisdom for her mother.

“I was talking to Olympia and I was like, ‘Baby, I don’t want to lose’, and she was like, ‘Mummy, you can’t win all the time and I know you’re trying your best,’” Williams said.

“I’m just trying to take it one day at a time and keep fighting.”
