The Romanian teenager Emma Raducanu stunned the home crowd by taking down the six-time champion 6-4 6-4.

Emma Raducanu has never faced Serena Williams before, so it was interesting to see how she fares against the 23-time Grand Slam champion. Raducanu, who is only 19, showed no fear as she took on one of the greatest players of all time.

Serena Williams was shocked by her opponent’s play, and was unable to find her rhythm throughout the match. It is the first time that Williams has lost to a player ranked outside the Top 200 in the world since 1999.

Raducanu made a slow start to proceedings as Williams raced into a 4-1 lead.

Williams, who was playing her first match since withdrawing from the Rogers Cup last month with a back injury, fought hard in the second set but ultimately Raducanu proved too strong. But the younger player showed great character to battle back, winning five games in a row to take the first set.

It was a huge shock result and afterwards Williams admitted she was taken aback by the level of her opponent’s play.

“I was definitely surprised. I thought she played really well,” said the 23-time grand slam champion. “She made a lot of shots that I wasn’t expecting her to make. She played really freely and took some big swings out there.”

The defeat means that Serena has now failed to win a title since 2017, when she won the Australian Open while pregnant with her daughter Olympia.

Emma Raducanu was playing in her first WTA main draw event. She had previously only won two tour-level matches, both in qualifying rounds.

The 19-year-old will face either Anastasija Sevastova or Madison Brengle in the second round.
