Sophia Smith helps Thorns to get to the 3rd NWSL championship.

Sophia Smith, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NWSL Draft out of Stanford University, scored both goals for Portland in the final. The 22-year-old forward tallied in the 69th minute and then again just three minutes later to put the Thorns up 2-0.
The Current had their chances in the game, but Portland goalkeeper Adrianna Franch came up with some big saves to preserve the clean sheet. With the win, the Thorns become the first team in NWSL history to win three championships.
They also join FC Kansas City as the only two teams to win back-to-back titles. Sophia Smith is the youngest player ever to score in an NWSL final. Smith put the Thorns on top with a clinical finish in the fourth minute.
Midfielder Meghan Klingenberg delivered a perfect cross from the left flank that found an open Smith at the back post. The 22-year-old striker calmly volleyed the ball past Kansas City goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart to give Portland an early lead.
Just two minutes into the second half, Thorns defender Emily Menges doubled Portland’s advantage. Klingenberg sent in a low cross from the left that was deflected by a Kansas City defender and rolled into the back of the net for an own goal.
