Sophia Smith is leading the NWSL 2022 league.

Sophia Smith tallied five NWSL Goals of the Week in 2020, four more than any other player, and led the league with nine goals overall. Now, as the NWSL approaches its 2022 season, Smith is poised to take her game to new heights and lead her team to glory.
NWSL commissioner Lisa Baird said of Smith, “She has all the tools to be one of the best players in the world.”
Smith is also tied for the NWSL lead in game-winning goals with three. In just her second NWSL season, Smith is quickly becoming one of the most dangerous and impactful players in the league. She has already earned herself a spot on the NWSL Best XI and was named NWSL Player of the Month for May. At just 22 years old, Smith has a very bright future ahead of her in the NWSL.

Sophia Smith may only be a rookie, but she’s already making her mark on the NWSL. The young forward has been a key part of the Portland Thorns’ success this season, scoring eight goals and adding two assists in just 11 games.
Thanks to Smith’s efforts, the Thorns currently lead the league with 29 goals, nine ahead of the second-best Red Stars, and with 80 shots on goal, 16 ahead of Chicago. Portland’s +17 goal differential is also best in the NWSL.
Smith’s impressive play has not gone unnoticed, as she was recently named NWSL Player of the Week for her performance in a 3-1 win over Sky Blue FC. In that game, Smith scored twice and added an assist, helping the Thorns to their sixth straight victory.
If Smith can keep up her strong play, there’s no doubt that the Thorns will be one of the teams to beat in the NWSL this season. NWSL fans will be able to watch Smith and the Thorns take on the best teams in the world when the 2022 NWSL season kicks off.
