The latest meeting of Savannah Marshall and Claressa Shields- what can the women tell of each other?

Savannah Marshall and Claressa Shields have been on a collision course for some time now, with a potential professional fight materialising in the near future.
And Shields, who is the current WBC and IBF middleweight champion, has made it clear she will not let Marshall forget about their amateur days when they do eventually meet in the ring. “I swear, that girl talks about our fight like it was the greatest thing that ever happened to her,” Shields told ESPN. “It’s like, ‘B*tch, you lost. I don’t want to hear about it no more.’ She needs to stop bringing up my name and move on.”
Marshall defeated Shields in the quarter-finals of the 2011 World Championships, but the latter avenged that defeat in the 2012 Olympics, before going on to win professional titles at both middleweight and super-middleweight. And Shields believes that Marshall’s constant reference to their amateur days is nothing more than a way for her to try and stay relevant.
It was a masterful performance from Marshall, who showed great heart and determination to come back from an early deficit. The victory takes Marshall’s record to 10-0-1 (7 KOs) and she is now the undisputed middleweight champion of the world.
The win also cements her place as one of the pound-for-pound best female boxers in the world. Marshall has fought some tough opposition during her career, including the likes of WBA and IBF champion Claressa Shields, but she has always come out on top.
The win over Shields was particularly impressive, as Marshall became the first person to ever defeat the American boxing star.
Claressa Shields is an American professional boxer who has held world championships in three weight classes. As an amateur, she won gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics, becoming only the second American boxer, male or female, to win consecutive Olympic titles. She is also a two-time world champion, having held the WBC and IBF titles since April 2019.
This is what she says about Savannah: “She did it to Christina Hammer and now she’s doing it to me. It doesn’t phase me, I think it actually makes me train harder. I know what I’m capable of and I know what she’s capable of, so it doesn’t bother me. It actually gives me more motivation to beat her even worse." \
“I think Savannah is underestimating me, thinking that because I’m younger than her, that I don’t have the experience. But I actually have more experience in the ring than she does, I’ve had more fights. She’s only had eight and I’ve had 11. So I don’t think Savannah is giving me the credit that I deserve. I think she should be worried about me, I don’t think I should be worried about her. She’s the one that should be losing sleep over this fight, not me.”
Marshall is a true champion and a class act inside and outside of the ring. She is a credit to the sport of boxing and is an inspiration to all female boxers.
