Raducanu was up a set and a break in the second, but Ostapenko came back to win the match. This is not the first time that Raducanu has retired from a match.

In July, she retired from her first-round match at the Bucharest Open against Monica Niculescu. Raducanu has been hampered by injuries throughout her career. She has retired from eight of the 11 matches she has played this year.

Raducanu’s retirement comes as a surprise, as she had just won her first WTA Tour title in August, at the Citi Open. Emma Raducanu has been forced to retire from her Korea Open second-round match against Jelena Ostapenko due to injury.

The Romanian, who is making her return to the tour after a seven-month absence, was trailing 6-1, 4-1 when she was forced to retire. Raducanu looked in good form in the first set, but her injury appeared to flare up in the second set and she was unable to continue.

This is a disappointing result for Raducanu, who was hoping to build on her strong showing at the US Open, where she reached the third round. “I’m very sorry to Emma,” Ostapenko said after the match. “She’s a great player and I hope she’s going to be healthy soon.”

Raducanu later announced her retirement from tennis, citing the injuries that have plagued her throughout her career. “It is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement from professional tennis,” Raducanu said in a statement.

“I have been battling injuries for many years and unfortunately, they have taken their toll. I would like to thank my family, friends, and fans for their support throughout my career.”

This was a big breakthrough for the 20-year-old, who had been struggling with injuries.

Raducanu’s retirement is a disappointing end to the Korea Open, but Ostapenko will now face either Anastasija Sevastova or Madison Keys in the quarter-finals.
