Germany will be a tough opponent, as they always are. The United States has never lost to Germany in 25 games, but the Germans have closed the gap in recent years. In fact, Germany is currently ranked No. 2 in the world, just behind the U.S.
So who should USWNT fans keep an eye on during the game? Here are five of Germany’s top female players.
- Dzsenifer Marozsan
If there’s one player on Germany that can take over a game, it’s Dzsenifer Marozsan. The 30-year-old attacking midfielder is currently playing for Lyon in France and is widely considered to be one of the best players in the world. She’s a creative playmaker with an incredible work ethic and an eye for goal.
- Sara Däbritz
Sara Däbritz is another player to watch in the German midfield. The 27-year-old is currently playing for Bayern Munich and is known for her vision, technical ability, and goalscoring. Däbritz made her Germany debut in 2014 and has since become a key player for the team. She scored the opening goal in Germany’s World Cup semifinal victory over Sweden last year.
- Alexandra Popp
Alexandra Popp is a versatile forward who can also play in midfield. The 31-year-old is currently captain of Germany and plays her club football for Wolfsburg. Popp is a strong and powerful player with excellent finishing. She’s been a Germany international since 2009 and has played over 100 games for her country.
- Lena Oberdorf
Lena Oberdorf is an up-and-coming player to watch in the German squad. The 20-year-old made her Germany debut earlier this year and has already made an impact with her mature performances. Oberdorf plays her club football for Wolfsburg and is a versatile defender who can also play in midfield.
- Almuth Schult
Almuth Schult is Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper. The 31-year-old has over 50 caps for her country and is known for her agility, reflexes, and leadership. Schult made her Germany debut in 2009 and has been the team’s starting goalkeeper since 2013. She was a key player in Germany’s 2016 Olympic victory, keeping two clean sheets in the tournament.
