The U.S. had not beaten Germany in four years. The USWNT got off to a slow start, conceding a goal in the 13th minute when Germany’s Alex Popp found the back of the net following a US turnover in the attacking third.

The USWNT managed to equalize in the 39th minute, when Christen Press slotted home a rebound after Germany goalkeeper Almuth Schult saved Megan Rapinoe’s initial shot. Just before halftime, USWNT forward Alex Morgan had a chance to put her team up 2-1, but her shot from close range went over the bar.

In the second half, both teams had chances to score, but it was the USWNT that ultimately found the game-winner in the 84th minute. Press scored her second goal of the game, finishing off a scramble in front of the German net to give the USWNT a 2-1 lead.

With the win, the USWNT avoided what would have been a very embarrassing loss to a German team that is not even close to being at full strength.

USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski made an attacking change at halftime, bringing on Catarina Macario for Christen Press. The USWNT turned the game around in the second half with two late goals from Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan to win 2-1.

This was a big win for the USWNT as they look towards the 2022 FIFA World Cup. They will now face off against Brazil on October 25th in Orlando, Florida. What are your thoughts on the USWNT’s victory over Germany? Let us know in the comments below!
