Washington dealt former All-Star center Tianna Hawkins to the Los Angeles Sparks in exchange for the sixth pick. The move was made in an effort to clear up Washington’s salary cap space as they looked to make a run at signing free agent guard Angel McCoughtry.

The Mystics were unable to land McCoughtry, but they did use their newfound financial flexibility to sign veteran center Emma Meesseman away from Belgium’s top club team. Meesseman joined Washington on a three-year deal worth $8 million.

The Mystics also used the sixth pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft to select former Louisville center Asia Durr. Washington is clearly building towards the future with its young core of players, but the team will need to make some improvements before the start of the 2022-2023 season.

  1. The Mystics need to find a way to replace Delle Donne’s scoring production.

  2. Washington needs to add some depth at the guard position.

  3. The team must improve its rebounding if it wants to contend for a championship.

  4. The Mystics need to find a way to close out games better.

  5. Washington must avoid injuries if it wants to have a successful season.

The Mystics also have one of the best point guards in the league in Kristi Toliver, as well as other key contributors like Ariel Atkins and Tayler Hill. Washington will look to improve upon its fifth-place finish in the 2022 standings and make a deeper run in the playoffs next season.

The Washington Mystics are a professional basketball team based in Washington, D.C. The Mystics compete in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and are currently the reigning WNBA champions, having won the title in 2019. Washington has been one of the league’s most successful teams, making the playoffs in 14 of its 22 seasons and winning four conference championships.
