What will the Women's Club World Cup tournament entail?
Alongside the announcement of a Women’s Club World Cup, Infantino announced that there would also be an expansion of Women’s World Cup qualifiers and a Women’s National Team World League.
“The Women’s Club World Cup will be a tournament featuring the best club teams from across the globe. It will bring together some of the world’s greatest players, coaches, and fans in a celebration of women’s soccer. We believe this event will help promote gender equality in sports, increase visibility for female athletes, and create a platform for inspiring more young women to pursue soccer.”
The Women’s Club World Cup will occur every four years, beginning in 2021, and is set to replace the Women’s Club Championship which had been running since 2000. The Women’s Club World Cup will feature 12 top teams from each of the six FIFA Confederations, with a total of 72 participants over three stages of competition.
The tournament is set to run for about two weeks and will occur in either November or December. The Women’s Club World Cup is a monumental step forward for Women’s football and will provide a great platform for Women’s clubs to showcase their talents on the global stage.
The Women’s Club World Cup promises to be an exciting event that will help grow Women’s football as well as create new opportunities for Women across the world. FIFA is committed to doing all it can to increase visibility and accessibility of Women’s football, and this Women’s Club World Cup is one of the ways it plans to do that.
We can look forward to some exciting Women’s football matches in the Women’s Club World Cup in 2023!
