The UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award is given to the best female footballer playing in Europe, as voted for by a jury of journalists.

The UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award is given to the best player, regardless of nationality, who has played in a UEFA club competition during the previous season.

This year’s winner will be decided by a jury of 12 journalists from UEFA member countries, who will each submit a list of their top three players. The first, second and third-ranked players will then receive five, three and one point respectively.

The UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award was first presented in 2013, and has been won by German stars Nadine Kessler (2013), Melanie Behringer (2014) and Dzsenifer Marozsan (2017). French striker Eugenie Le Sommer was the inaugural recipient of the UEFA Best Women’s Player in Europe award in 2016.

This year, Beth Mead, Alexia Putellas and Lena Oberdorf are the only English players to be nominated for the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award. The Lionesses forward had a stellar 2019-20 season, scoring 15 goals in 22 appearances for Arsenal as they won the FA WSL title. Mead also played a key role in England’s run to the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup, scoring three goals in six appearances.

Alexia Putellas is one of the most exciting players in women’s football, and has been nominated for the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award after another excellent season for Barcelona. The Spanish midfielder was a key player for Barcelona as they won the Primera Division, Copa de la Reina and UEFA Women’s Champions League last season. Putellas also played a key role in Spain’s run to the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup, scoring three goals in seven appearances.

Lena Oberdorf is also one of the most promising young players in women’s football, and has been nominated for the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award after an excellent season for Wolfsburg. The German midfielder was a key player for Wolfsburg as they won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal last season. Oberdorf also played a key role in Germany’s run to the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup, scoring one goal in six appearances.

So, who has the best chance of winning the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award? All three nominees have a strong case, but Beth Mead is our pick. The Lionesses forward had an outstanding 2019-20 season, and her performances at the World Cup were also very impressive. Alexia Putellas and Lena Oberdorf are both very talented players, but we think Mead just has the edge.
