Who is the USWNT’s new superstar Sophia Smith?

The 22-year-old was the leading goalscorer for the USWNT at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup and has continued to score goals for her country. Sophia Smith is quickly becoming a superstar for the USWNT.
Sophia Smith was born in Colorado and played her youth soccer for Real Colorado. She then went on to play college soccer for the University of North Carolina. Sophia Smith made her debut for the USWNT in 2019 and has since scored nine goals in 14 appearances.
Sophia Smith made headlines around the world when she scored the winning goal for the United States in the final of the 2020 Under-20 Women’s World Cup. The strike, which came in the second period of extra time, was a deserved winner for the USA who had been the better team throughout the game.
It was also a fitting end to a fantastic tournament for Smith who had been one of her country’s standout performers. The forward scored five goals in total, including two in the semi-final against Mexico, as the USA went on to lift the trophy.
Smith’s performances in the World Cup caught the eye of many and it wasn’t long before she was being linked with a move to some of the biggest clubs in Europe. In the end, she decided to stay in the States and signed a professional contract with National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Portland Thorns.
The youngster made an immediate impact in the NWSL, scoring nine goals and providing four assists in her debut season. Smith’s performances earned her a place in the league’s Team of the Year as well as the Rookie of the Year award.
